A rare albino buffalo in Bangladesh, which became an internet sensation after being nicknamed “Donald Trump" for its distinctive blond tuft of hair, has been spared from Eid al-Adha sacrifice following last-minute government intervention.
The nearly 700-kg buffalo had already been sold for ritual slaughter ahead of Thursday’s Eid celebrations when authorities stepped in, citing security concerns and an extraordinary surge of public interest surrounding the animal.
According to officials, Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed ordered that the buffalo be spared, the buyer refunded, and the animal shifted to the national zoo in Dhaka under government care.
“At the last moment, the decision was taken to spare the buffalo from sacrifice due to security concerns and the unusual level of public interest," a ministry official said.
What initially began as a routine Eid livestock purchase soon transformed into a nationwide attraction after videos of the animal went viral on social media. Large crowds reportedly gathered at the farm in Narayanganj near Dhaka, with visitors travelling from different parts of the country to catch a glimpse of the unusually coloured buffalo and its calm demeanour.

How Buffalo Got ‘Donald Trump’ Nickname
Farm owner Ziauddin Mridha said the buffalo earned the nickname from his younger brother, who noticed a resemblance between the animal’s blond fringe and the hairstyle associated with US President Donald Trump.
Mridha said the four-year-old albino buffalo was bought around 10 months ago and requires special care, including regular feeding and frequent baths. He also described the animal as unusually gentle compared to other buffaloes.
Albino Buffaloes In Bangladesh
Albino buffaloes are considered extremely rare in Bangladesh, where the vast majority of water buffaloes have dark grey or black skin. Their unique appearance is caused by albinism — a genetic condition that prevents the production of melanin, resulting in cream-coloured or pale pinkish skin, light hair, and pink noses.
Because of their rarity, albino buffaloes often attract major public curiosity, especially during the busy Eid livestock market season. However, officials said it was the buffalo’s viral fame and growing public attention that ultimately led to the government’s decision to protect it from slaughter.
The buffalo has now been placed under the care of authorities and moved to Dhaka’s national zoo, where it is expected to remain as a special attraction.
