Janata Dal (United)’s Nitish Kumar is likely to step down as the Chief Minister of Bihar today (April 14, 2026), amid hectic political developments in the State.

Mr. Kumar, who has been Chief Minister for the past 21 years, is likely to tender his resignation after holding his last Cabinet meeting. He is likely to address the party legislature meeting and then the NDA legislature meeting, where the name of the new leader will be announced. Names of several BJP leaders who could become the Chief Minister are doing the rounds in the State’s political circles.

For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is going to have a Chief Minister in the State. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the new government on April 15 at Lok Bhawan.

Bihar finds itself on the cusp of a new political epoch on Tuesday when Nitish Kumar, the State’s longest-serving Chief Minister, is slated to make way for the first-ever BJP-led government in the province.
Ahead of his likely resignation on April 14, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday (April 13, 2026) met senior party leaders at his official residence to discuss names of legislators from the Janata Dal (United) who could be in the new Cabinet.
