Silchar: The driver of the Cachar district commissioner’s official vehicle was killed in a road accident in Silchar on Tuesday night.Hari Singha, 55, a resident of Larmagram in Ramnagar near Silchar, died on the spot after his scooter was allegedly hit from behind by a speeding SUV in the Ramnagar area.
Singha was serving as the official driver of the Cachar district commissioner.Police sources said the SUV belonged to the Food Corporation of India and carried a signboard reading “On Duty Food Corporation of India, DO, Silchar”. The vehicle, however, reportedly did not have a registered number plate at the time of the accident.Officials said the force of the collision threw Singha onto the road, causing instantaneous death.
Police reached the spot soon after the crash, recovered the body and sent it to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. The SUV has been seized and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the collision. The accident has again drawn attention to allegations that vehicles linked to government departments are flouting traffic rules, including the use of red name plates and the absence of proper registration details.
A similar fatal accident was reported in October last year, when a speeding car allegedly linked to the CPWD ran over and killed Sushil Das in Meherpur, Silchar. The recurrence of such incidents has intensified public concern over what many describe as a growing “VIP culture” and demands for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations.
