Bengaluru’s stray dog story has always lived somewhere between compassion and concern. Every locality has its own pack, its own caretakers, and its own complaints. Now the Greater Bangalore Authority has stepped in with a decision that has already created a storm.
The city plans to feed Chicken Rice to stray dogs twice every day. For many, it is an act of care. For others, it is an unnecessary burden on a civic system already stretched thin. Like most Bengaluru debates, this one has emotion, logic, confusion and curiosity packed together.
This move comes after long discussions and objections. Some argued that feeding meat might make stray dogs more aggressive. Others insisted that hungry dogs behave worse than full ones. After weighing the arguments, the authority has chosen to go ahead.
How The Feeding Plan Will Work
Officials have laid out a structured plan. Each dog will receive Chicken Rice twice daily, but distribution will begin only after stray dog shelters are constructed across the city. This is in line with Supreme Court directions that shelters should be created to manage stray populations more responsibly.
The cost, however, is the part that is making everyone look twice. Each stray dog maintenance will cost around Rs 3035 every month. The daily expenditure is Rs 102, split between the cost of cooking Chicken Rice and other operational expenses that come with maintaining such a system.
The Growing Cost Of Compassion
If the numbers feel heavy, that is because they are. The total estimated monthly expense for this initiative stands at Rs 66.95 lakh. Over a year, this climbs to Rs 8.03 crore. These figures will grow further as the stray population increases.
A committee led by Bengaluru Central Corporation Commissioner Rajendra Cholan has been formed to assess relocation, maintenance, and long term management strategies. The idea is to build a system that is not just compassionate but also sustainable.
What Exactly Will Each Dog Get
The authority has even broken down the meal to the last gram, ensuring it is nutritious and consistent. Here is the ingredient table that has been approved:
| Ingredient | Quantity (Gram) |
| Rice | 150 gm |
| Chicken | 100 gm |
| Vegetables | 100 gm |
| Cooking Oil | 10 gm |
| Salt | 10 gm |
| Turmeric | 2.5 gm |
| Total (Raw) | 372.5 gm |
| After Cooking | 600 gm |
The meal is designed to be filling, balanced and suitable for regular feeding.
Where Bengaluru’s Strays Are Concentrated
The early numbers collected show how unevenly stray dogs are spread across the city. Some zones are heavily burdened while others have relatively fewer dogs. Here is the corporation wise count so far:
| Corporation | Number of Stray Dogs |
| Bengaluru Central | 222 |
| Bengaluru East | 193 |
| Bengaluru West | 37 |
| Bengaluru North | 1623 |
| Bengaluru South | 131 |
North zone clearly carries the largest stray population, which means the feeding operations and shelter construction there will be the most demanding.
Locations Identified For Stray Dog Shelters
The authority has also identified where the new dog shelters will come up. These are planned based on the presence of strays near sensitive areas like schools, hospitals, stations and playgrounds.
- Bengaluru Central: Cantonment Super Speciality Hospital premises
- Bengaluru East: Sadamangala and Varthur
- Bengaluru West: Kottigepalya
- Bengaluru North: Ambedkar Nagar
- Bengaluru South: Bingipura
The idea is to create controlled spaces where feeding, care and monitoring can happen without causing chaos on public roads.
The Road Ahead For The City
Whether this plan will bring harmony or headaches remains to be seen. Some residents welcome the move with relief, believing that well fed dogs are calmer and healthier. Others fear this will attract more strays or create dependency.
But one thing is certain. Bengaluru is attempting a large, structured experiment in urban compassion. Feeding a city’s stray dogs twice daily is not a small gesture. It is a responsibility that will shape how the city balances empathy, safety and civic order in the years ahead.
