Ranchi: Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) mayor Roshni Khalkho came into action on the first day of her assuming the office, taking up a broom and buckets to clean Birsa Munda Jail Park, underscoring her commitment to public service.Khalkho on Thursday visited the jail along with sanitation workers to clean the prison complex before heading to the Ranchi Collectorate office to take oath as the new mayor, sending out a strong message on cleanliness and civic responsibility. The prison complex established in 1899 was used by the British to lock up tribal leaders dissenting against the British Raj.Roshni swept the floors and outside areas of the prison complex, and washed Birsa’s statue with sanitation workers, setting an example for residents to keep their surroundings clean.
The newly elected mayor emphasised on cleanliness. “Cleanliness is a collective responsibility shared by all. We must keep our city and surroundings clean and hygienic, like we keep our homes. I tried to convey the message of cleanliness by participating in Shramdaan at the Jail Park complex along with the sanitation workers. I will try to build a sense of civic duty among residents of the city in the days to come,” Roshni said.
Khalkho then paid tributes to tribal martyrs at the park and sought blessings for a successful tenure to transform Ranchi into a developed city. “Our ancestors sacrificed their lives in freeing the country from the British and bringing a change. Their tales of struggle have always inspired me to do good for society and bring a change, even if I have to walk alone to achieve that. As I assume the office today, I will try to work collectively with the elected councillors to make Ranchi a better city,” Roshni added.
