Kolhapur: A Congolese national living in Hatkanangale tehsil of Kolhapur district, despite his visa having expired, was deported to his home country on Saturday after authorities found him staying illegally in India for nearly one-and-a-half years.Adelin Katshoko Tshimbamfumu, a citizen of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was residing on the premises of a private educational institution in Hatkanangale and working as a French teacher. During scrutiny by the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) of the Kolhapur police’s passport division, officials found that his visa had expired in Jan 2025 and that he was staying in India illegally.Further verification revealed that a case had already been registered against him in Bengaluru for violating visa rules.
The Bengaluru court imposed a fine of Rs 4,000 and ordered his deportation. He was escorted to Mumbai International Airport and sent back to Congo.“For nearly one and half years the Congolese national was residing in India. We detained him and later found that he has a court case pending at Bengaluru court for violation of visa. We got the order from Bengaluru’s Mayo Court to deport him and accordingly his airplane ticket was booked.
He was deported on Saturday morning from Mumbai’s international airport. It is mandatory to leave the country immediately within 24 hours of expiry of the visa,” said Rajendra Sonsurkar, assistant police inspector of the FRO Passport Division of Kolhapur police.Officials said Tshimbamfumu had originally arrived in India on a student-teacher visa to study French in Bengaluru before later taking up employment in Kolhapur.The FRO is the primary agency responsible for regulating the registration, movement, stay, departure and extension of stay of foreign nationals in India.
