Vijayawada: A shocking incident of alleged social boycott and caste discrimination has been reported at Srirampuram village in Reddygudem mandal of NTR district, where a young couple who entered into a love marriage, along with their entire family, were reportedly ostracised by village elders.According to the couple, village caste leaders imposed harsh restrictions on the family after Teja and Nagalakshmi married against traditional norms. Residents were reportedly warned not to visit the family’s house, interact with them or invite them to social gatherings. Villagers were also allegedly threatened with a fine of Rs 2 lakh if they defied the diktat issued by the elders.Unable to bear the humiliation and pressure, the couple is said to have left the village.
However, the girl’s family continues to face severe difficulties and social isolation. The controversy intensified recently after the couple was blessed with a baby boy. Family members reportedly tried to invite villagers for the child’s naming ceremony, hoping to mend relations. But fresh announcements were allegedly made in the village instructing people not to attend the function. The situation took a disturbing turn when village elders allegedly imposed another Rs 2 lakh penalty on the family for entering the village and personally inviting residents to the ceremony despite earlier warnings. The affected family claims that despite approaching Mylavaram police and filing a complaint, no concrete action has been taken so far. They have now appealed to the district collector and SP to intervene and ensure justice.
