Belagavi: A case has been registered at the city CEN police station over duping of an elderly woman, a resident of Bhagyanagar, Belagavi, of Rs 65 lakh by creating fear of digital arrest. The complaint alleges that cyber thieves, who threatened the elderly woman with a 10-day digital arrest through a video call, tricked her into believing they were Delhi court officials and defrauded her by transferring money from her bank accounts in phases.

Vijaya Shivashankar, Uppin, 83, who was cheated by cyber fraudsters, has filed a complaint with the city cyber police station. The complaint states that in the first week of April, an unknown person made a video call and showed a court scene and a person resembling a judge, saying that she were was being questioned by a Delhi court. He also warned that no one should be informed about this until the investigation was over.

Then he obtained details of bank accounts, deposits, and jewellery in the house. A total of Rs 65 lakh was transferred to various accounts, including Rs 15 lakh on April 7 and Rs 50 lakh on April 9. The incident has left the couple’s two children devastated, with their mother dead and their father behind bars.
