A surprise inspection by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at a State GST office has led to a major administrative reshuffle, with 162 officials transferred in one of the biggest such actions in recent months.

The unannounced visit on April 8 brought to light several concerns around attendance, discipline, and delays in public services. During the inspection, the Chief Minister reviewed office operations and interacted with both officials and taxpayers.

Officials Found Absent During Working Hours

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, several officials, including senior staff, were found absent during working hours. The findings raised serious concerns about adherence to attendance norms and overall accountability within the department.

Taxpayers Flag Delays, Repeated Visits

Taxpayers present at the office shared complaints about slow services. Many said they had to visit multiple times for routine work and often found officials unavailable, pointing to inefficiencies in service delivery.

Strict Directions Issued Post-Visit

Following the inspection, the Chief Minister ordered strict enforcement of attendance and punctuality rules. She also directed verification of biometric attendance records and called for immediate steps to strengthen service delivery mechanisms.

Large-Scale Transfers Across Ranks

Acting on these directions, the government carried out a wide-ranging reshuffle. Officials who had been posted in the same roles for extended periods were transferred to improve efficiency and accountability.

A total of 162 personnel were moved, including 3 Assistant Commissioners, 58 Section Officers (Grade I), 22 Assistant Section Officers (Grade II), 74 Senior Assistants (Grade III), and 5 Junior Assistants (Grade IV).

Part Of Wider Push For Administrative Reform

According to the officials cited by NDTV, the action is part of a broader effort by the Delhi government to tighten discipline through surprise inspections and compliance checks across departments. Earlier reviews had already highlighted issues such as absenteeism, procedural delays, and weak service delivery.

Focus On Accountability And Better Services

The Chief Minister has reiterated that public service delivery standards cannot be compromised, and that accountability will apply uniformly across all levels of administration.

The government said the reshuffle is aimed at resetting the department’s functioning and improving discipline, efficiency, and responsiveness in taxpayer services.
