As the situation eases in West Asia, the Delhi government has withdrawn its Work-from-Home (WFH) arrangement and revised working hours for offices. The development comes as the United States and Iran recently announced a ceasefire and initiated a 60-day window to finalise a peace deal.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta approved the withdrawal of Work from Home on Wednesdays and Saturdays, citing easing of tensions in West Asia.
“Now that the geopolitical situation has practically normalised, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved withdrawal of Work from Home on Wednesdays and Saturdays," according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
Working hours for Delhi government offices have been revised to 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM. However, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will continue to function with its existing office timings of 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
West Asia War, Uncertainty Over Energy Flows
The hybrid work policy was introduced in May this year, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for rational fuel consumption and responsible energy usage in the wake of raging conflict in West Asia that triggered uncertainty over global fuel supplies.
Aside from the Work-from-Home policy, the Delhi government had also announced a set of fuel-saving measures to ease pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves. Accordingly, half of all official meetings were shifted to online mode to reduce travel and fuel usage.
PM Modi had urged citizens to reduce unnecessary fuel use, opt for public transport and carpooling, use work-from-home wherever feasible, postpone gold purchases for a year, and avoid non-essential foreign travel.
The war in West Asia and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz saw global economies plunge into chaos. The key waterway accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supply.
