A family trip to Goa meant to be filled with music, laughter and precious memories ended in a tragedy that unfolded in just 15 minutes. What was supposed to be their first carefree holiday together became a night that only one person survived to remember.
Delhi resident Bhavana Joshi and her husband Vinod Kumar had travelled to Goa with Bhavana’s three sisters, Anita, Saroj and Kamala, for a short break that began on 4 December. On Saturday night, they headed to Birch by Romeo Lane, a nightclub in Arpora, expecting an evening of celebration.
But moments after they stepped inside, flames tore through the club. Panic erupted. Smoke thickened. People ran towards the exit. In the chaos, Vinod pushed Bhavana through the main door, helping her escape the burning building. Coughing and disoriented, she stumbled out into the open air.
When she turned around, Vinod was no longer behind her. He had gone back inside to try and save her three sisters. Within minutes, fire consumed them all.
A survivor left alone
Outside the club, Bhavana waited for her husband and sisters, her eyes stinging from smoke. She kept dialling Vinod’s phone. It rang again and again, unanswered. When his body was later carried out, Bhavana was still holding her phone, still calling.
Hotel staff tried to comfort her. Police tape sealed off the charred structure. A trip that began at their hotel in Baga had ended in unbearable loss. She was now the only surviving member of the group of five.
Relatives rushed to Goa overnight. They spoke of the children back home who still did not know the full truth. “We haven’t told them all four have died," one family member said. “We only said two sisters are gone and the other two are missing. We want to take the bodies back."
Another relative held up a phone showing a photograph. “She is completely charred," he said, voice trembling. “She has no skin left."
For Bhavana, the holiday ended in silence, broken only by the voices of police and rescue workers. She survived because her husband pushed her to safety, and then walked back into the flames to save others.
Goa nightclub fire
At least 25 people, including 20 staff members, died in the massive fire that engulfed the nightclub in the early hours of Sunday. Among them were the three Joshi sisters, Anita, Kamala and Saroj, and Vinod Kumar.
The bodies of Anita and Kamala were identified and preserved, but two others were so severely burnt that identification has been extremely difficult.
Kamala, the eldest sister, leaves behind her husband Naveen, a businessman, and their two children. Vinod, who was Naveen’s brother, is survived by his wife Bhavana and their two children.
