In a deeply disturbing revelation, a report has detailed how the accused in the South Delhi rape and murder case allegedly attempted to use the victim’s fingerprint to unlock a biometric locker after assaulting her.
The accused, identified as Rahul Meena, reportedly dragged the unconscious 22-year-old victim from a rooftop study room to a lower floor in her residence to access the safe, India Today reported.
During interrogation, Meena confessed that he brought the victim, who was in an unconscious state, into the room where the locker was kept and tried to unlock it using her blood-stained finger.
However, the biometric system failed to recognise the fingerprint, possibly due to blood on her hand or lack of circulation, the report quoted police sources as saying.
LOCKER FORCED OPEN, CASH AND JEWELLERY STOLEN
After failing to open the locker through biometric authentication, the accused allegedly used a screwdriver to break it open, as per the report.
He then stole cash and jewellery from the residence and placed them in a bag found inside the house.
According to news agency PTI, cash amounting to approximately Rs 2 lakh was missing from the house.
Investigators believe the accused was aware of the house layout and the location of valuables, given his prior employment with the family.
THE SOUTH DELHI HORROR
The victim, a 22-year-old IIT graduate and daughter of a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, was alone at her residence in southeast Delhi’s Kailash Hills when the incident occurred.
Her parents had gone to the gym and returned around 8 am to find her lying unconscious.
She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead.
Preliminary investigation, as cited by PTI, suggests that the victim was sexually assaulted and then strangled using a mobile phone charging cable.
Police also indicated that she was hit with a stick, causing blunt force trauma, after she resisted the attack.
CCTV footage showed the accused entering the house around 6.49 am and leaving at approximately 7.20 am, during which the crime is believed to have been committed.
ENTRY USING SPARE KEY, CLOTHES CHANGED BEFORE ESCAPE
The accused gained entry into the house using a spare key, the location of which he knew from his time as a domestic help.
The family had dismissed him around one-and-a-half months ago following complaints about his conduct.
After committing the crime, Meena allegedly changed his clothes inside the house to avoid detection.
CCTV footage showed him entering in dark-coloured trousers and exiting in a different pair, carrying a backpack.
ACCUSED’S BACKGROUND AND ARREST
According to PTI, Meena had worked with the family for about eight months before being terminated.
During the inquiry, it emerged that he was involved in online gaming and had borrowed money from other domestic helpers that he had not returned.
Police also revealed that he is wanted in a separate sexual assault case in Rajasthan’s Alwar, where an FIR has been registered.
He allegedly committed the offence there a day before fleeing to Delhi.
More than 15 police teams were deployed across multiple locations before he was arrested from a hotel in Dwarka.
Officials said strong evidence has been gathered and a comprehensive case will be presented in court.
The case has sent shockwaves through the upscale Kailash Hills locality, with residents raising concerns over safety and verification of domestic workers.
Police said further investigation is underway, and they are awaiting the postmortem report to confirm details of the sexual assault.
Authorities have assured that stringent action will be taken to ensure justice for the victim.
