Ederson Exits Manchester City Ahead Of Gianluigi Donnarumma's Arrival

Long-serving Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has completed a move to Fenerbahce in Turkey, the Premier League club announced Tuesday, ahead of the expected arrival of Italian international Gianluigi Donnarumma. Donnarumma is reportedly set to join Pep Guardiola’s side for 35 million euros (£30 million, $41 million) after being deemed surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain, despite his crucial role in their Champions League victory last season.

City also signed Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford during the close season, and he has started each of their three league matches so far, but the Englishman has not managed to impress.

Donnarumma’s imminent arrival facilitated Brazilian international Ederson’s move to Turkey, concluding a trophy-laden tenure in Manchester that began in 2017.

City described Ederson as “one of the most successful players in the club’s history".

With his exceptional distribution, Ederson was key to Guardiola’s possession-based approach, though last season saw increasing concerns about his shot-stopping abilities.

“You helped us make history," City posted on social media Tuesday, accompanied by images of Ederson celebrating various titles including the Champions League in 2023.

Ederson also secured six Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

“I arrived in Manchester eight years ago full of hope, but I could not have predicted such a wonderful time together," said Ederson, who made 372 appearances across all competitions for City.

He kept 122 clean sheets in 276 league appearances.

“Playing for City has been the most special time of my life and I will always be a fan of this extraordinary club," he added.

“I’m leaving with my wife and children, but I’m parting from a big family here."
