A woman allegedly slit her abdomen in a desperate attempt to relieve intense labour pain at her home, and later delivered a healthy baby girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, officials said.
The 35-year-old woman, identified as Nankai, a resident of Nandwal village under Baundi police station area, was rushed to the Fakharpur Community Health Centre by neighbours after they heard her screams.
She gave birth to a healthy baby girl through a normal delivery at the facility, but her condition worsened shortly afterward, officials said. Nankai was subsequently referred to the district hospital, where doctors discovered a deep abdominal wound that was allegedly caused by a serrated knife.
“She was brought to the hospital at around 3.20 pm on Thursday. Her intestines had protruded, and she had suffered significant blood loss," the hospital’s chief medical superintendent told reporters.
Due to the seriousness of her injuries, hospital staff said the woman was referred to a higher medical facility in Lucknow for specialized treatment.
A video reportedly showing the woman on a stretcher has circulated on social media, in which she can allegedly be heard saying she cut open her abdomen due to the extreme pain, police said.
According to the neighbours, Nankai’s husband had passed away from an illness around six months ago, leaving her to live alone.
On Thursday afternoon, when she went into labour, the pain became unbearable, prompting her to allegedly take the knife used for chopping vegetables to cut open her abdomen.
Soon, residents alerted emergency services, and an ambulance transported her to the health centre, where she gave birth.
As her condition deteriorated after childbirth, she was first moved to the district hospital and subsequently referred to a medical facility in Lucknow. Officials said her mother, Neeta, accompanied her during the ambulance transfer.
