A story of love, trust, and betrayal has recently caught the attention of social media users across India. A Russian woman who came to India for her PhD says her life took a shocking turn after her husband disappeared and later returned under unexpected circumstances.
Her detailed account, shared by Humans of Bombay, has sparked discussions and messages of support from people online.Olga, the woman at the center of this story, says she came to India full of hope and plans for her future. Years later, she says she is still in the country, trying to navigate legal challenges and rebuild her life.
Moving to India for love and studies
Olga arrived in India in 2015 to pursue her PhD. She had already met the man she would later marry.
Over time, their relationship grew, and in 2019, they tied the knot. She wrote about her early days: “I came to India for love. I never imagined that same love would become the cage I’m still trying to escape. I’m from Russia, and in 2015, I arrived in India to pursue my PhD, excited and hopeful for a new beginning. I had already met him the year before, and falling in love with him felt natural and effortless. By 2019, we were married.
I told myself, ‘This is it.’”She believed she had found a home in India. “India is home now. He is home. For years, everything felt right. In November 2023, I applied for my spousal visa; all he had to do was attend a single interview. Instead, two months later, in January 2024, he disappeared. No goodbye, no explanation, nothing.”
Sudden disappearance during visa process
Olga says trouble began when she applied for her spousal visa in November 2023. Her husband was supposed to attend one interview, but he disappeared in January 2024 without informing her.“I filed a missing-person report. For six months, I answered every police question, waited for every call, and lived with the fear that he might be dead. I had no money, no family here, and the friends who tried to help me suffered consequences; some were even forced out of their homes. And because my visa was stuck, I couldn’t leave India. I was trapped in every possible way.”She adds that during this period, she had no financial support and could not leave India because her visa process was pending.
Finding him alive on social media
Months later, Olga says she discovered something shocking while scrolling through Instagram.“Then July came. Scrolling through Instagram, I saw him alive, dressed as a Sadhu, smiling, and leading tourists in the hills as if the world he left behind didn’t exist. My hands were shaking. He knew I thought he was dead. He knew what I was going through, and he simply walked away from it.”According to Olga, this was when she realized that he had not died but had voluntarily left.
Apology and alleged betrayal
Olga says her husband later returned and apologized.“When he finally returned, he held my hands and said, ‘I’m sorry. I love you. I made a mistake.’ I wanted to believe him so badly that I did. I took a job in Himachal Pradesh. He joined me in December. I thought we were rebuilding.”However, she alleges that he was living with another woman nearby.“But he wasn’t staying with me. He was living with another woman just 15 kilometers away.
For six months, I sent him money, cooked for him on weekends, and held on to a marriage he had already left. When I confronted him, he didn’t deny it. Instead, he called my boss and told them I was mentally unstable. He and his girlfriend wanted me fired, broken, erased.”
Deboarded from flight, still fighting
Olga also shared on her personal Instagram page, “And when I finally thought I was going to escape from this hell and went to board my flight back to Russia, I was offloaded by immigration because of my husband’s missing situation in 2024. I got stuck in India without any job, money, or place to stay, even with a valid visa and no proper way to overstay.”Olga’s story has become a widely discussed topic online. Many people have shared messages of support, and according to her account, the matter is still ongoing as she fights to return home and rebuild her life.Disclaimer: This story is based on a personal account shared on social media.
