Israeli military chief Lt Gen Eyal Zamir on Tuesday said the joint US-Israeli offensive against Iran was “approaching a strategic crossroads" and vowed to “intensify the damage inflicted on the regime". His remarks came hours after a US-imposed deadline on Iran expires.

“We are approaching a strategic crossroads in the joint campaign against Iran. So far, we have achieved significant gains, including relative to the objectives we set at the outset of the operation," Zamir said in a military statement. “We will continue to act with determination and intensify the damage inflicted on the regime."

The remarks came after the Israeli military announced it had struck eight bridges that it said were used by Iran’s armed forces “for transporting weapons and military equipment".

Israel is escalating the military campaign in Iran as US President Donald Trump threatened that “a whole civilisation will die tonight" as Iran showed no sign of accepting his ultimatum to open the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday, 8 pm Eastern Time.

Trump has demanded that Iran end its blockade of Gulf oil, or every bridge and power plant in the country would be destroyed. Iran says it would retaliate against US allies in the Gulf, whose desert cities would be uninhabitable without power or water.

Ahead of Trump’s deadline, strikes on Iran intensified, hitting railway and road bridges, an airport and a petrochemical plant. US forces also attacked targets on Kharg Island, home to Iran’s main oil export terminal. Iran responded by declaring it would no longer hold back from hitting its Gulf neighbours’ infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Israel launched fresh attacks on Iranian infrastructure ahead of Trump’s deadline, having warned Iranians in a Persian-language social media post that anyone near railways would be in danger. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel targeted train tracks and bridges that were used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to transport operatives, weapons and raw materials.

Power was knocked out in parts of Karaj, west of Tehran, by a strike on transmission lines and a substation. A synagogue in Tehran was destroyed overnight, for which Israel later expressed regret and said it had targeted a senior commander.
