Several passengers were killed and others injured after they got off a halted train and were struck by an oncoming express train in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district on Sunday, according to preliminary information from railway authorities.

The incident occurred near Hetampur railway station in the Jhansi Division of North Central Railway after Train No. 19665 Khajuraho-Udaipur Intercity Express came to a halt around 4.15 pm.

Initial reports suggested that rumours of a fire aboard the train triggered panic among some passengers, prompting them to get off the train. Railway authorities, however, said the train had stopped after a passenger pulled the Alarm Chain Pulling (ACP) mechanism in a general coach.

According to a preliminary statement, several passengers moved onto an adjacent track while the train was halted. During this time, Train No. 20424 Firozpur-Seoni Patalkot Express, which was approaching on the up line, reportedly struck some of them, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

Railway officials said further details were being ascertained. Police and district administration officials also reached the spot as rescue and relief operations got underway.

The exact number of casualties has not been officially confirmed so far.
