Police have detained the trailer driver for questioning and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Five police personnel were killed and three others critically injured after a speeding trailer truck rammed into a police Bolero vehicle in Odisha’s Jharsuguda on Sunday morning, officials said.

The deceased have been identified as APR personnel Kashiram Bhoi and Debadatta Sa, Drill Sub-Inspector Niranjan Kujur, APR Havildar Lingaraj Dhurua, and Home Guard Bhaktabandhu Mirdha.

Their deaths have triggered widespread grief within the police fraternity and the local community.

The accident took place near the Jharsuguda Sadar Police Station at dawn, when the police vehicle, said to be on official duty, collided head-on with a speeding trailer coming from the opposite direction. The force of the crash completely crushed the Bolero, killing five personnel on the spot.

Three other personnel, including two members of the Armed Police Reserve (APR) and a sergeant, were seriously injured in the crash. They were rescued by local police and taken to the Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors said they remain in critical condition and are under close medical supervision.

Police have detained the trailer driver for questioning and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Senior officers arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to supervise rescue efforts and review the situation.

The incident has left the district in mourning, with tributes pouring in for the personnel who lost their lives while on duty.
