Former Indian women’s cricket team captain Jhulan Goswami was recently summoned for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing after a discrepancy was flagged in her father’s name in electoral records.
According to official sources, notices were issued to Jhulan Goswami and her two siblings after their father’s name appeared differently across documents, recorded as Nishith Ranjan Goswami in some records and Nishith Goswami in others.
The inconsistency triggered the scheduling of a hearing as part of the ongoing voter list verification exercise.
While the hearing date was fixed for the 27th, Jhulan Goswami was not required to appear in person and the issue was resolved remotely from her residence.
However, her two siblings were asked to attend the hearing physically at a local school, which had been designated as the venue for the process.
The hearings are being conducted under the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision drive, which aims to complete verification within a strict timeline.
To meet the deadline, the Commission has directed the West Bengal government to hold hearings for nearly 7 to 8 lakh voters every day.
Following these directions, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer has instructed district electoral officers and staff involved in the exercise to expedite the process.
As per the schedule, the hearing phase will continue until February 7. Election Commission sources said around 1.5 crore voters across West Bengal have been called for hearings so far, with verification for nearly 90 lakh voters already completed.
Jhulan Goswami, popularly known as the “Chakdaha Express," is one of the most celebrated figures in women’s cricket.
A former captain of the Indian women’s team, she retired in 2022 after a two-decade-long international career.
Goswami holds the world record for the most wickets in women’s international cricket with 355 scalps and also tops the list for the most wickets in Women’s World Cup history.
