Former England winger Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving following a single-vehicle crash on the M3, according to police and reports in the UK.

The 31-year-old footballer was detained after the Lamborghini he was driving reportedly collided with barriers on the southbound carriageway near the Minley Interchange in Hampshire on Thursday morning.

Police confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the incident and that there were no reported injuries.

Police Confirm Arrest

In a statement, Hampshire Police outlined the circumstances surrounding the incident and the subsequent arrest.

“Just before 9am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange," the statement read.

“No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported.

“The driver, a 31-year-old man, from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen.

“He has been bailed while our enquiries continue."

While police did not initially identify the driver, reports later confirmed that Sterling had been arrested.

‘An Extremely Tough Couple Of Years’

Following news of the arrest, a source close to Sterling claimed the player has been dealing with significant personal and professional challenges in recent years.

According to the source, Sterling has felt “worthless" and “forgotten about" after falling out of favour at the highest levels of the game despite a distinguished career for club and country.

“How a prolific English international who has steered the England squad to significant heights over the last decade has been made to feel worthless — forgotten about," the source said.

“The psychological strain that has put on him is immeasurable. Isolated. The second he touches a ball, being told he’s a flop and he’s finished. Mocked. Heckled."

The source also stressed that Sterling had only been arrested “under suspicion", adding that there is currently no proof that any substance was present in his system.

A Career Spanning The Highest Level

Sterling began his professional journey after progressing through the youth ranks at Queens Park Rangers before joining Liverpool in 2010.

He went on to enjoy successful spells with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, while also spending time on loan at Arsenal before moving to Dutch club Feyenoord.

On the international stage, Sterling earned 82 caps for England and represented the Three Lions at three FIFA World Cups — in 2014, 2018 and 2022.

Police investigations into Thursday’s incident remain ongoing.
