More than 400 people were arrested across France after PSG’s Champions League win over Arsenal sparked clashes, fires and unrest in Paris and beyond.

PSG’s Champions League triumph over Arsenal should have been a night of celebration. Instead, it quickly descended into scenes of chaos across France, with more than 400 people arrested following widespread clashes between football fans and police.

Authorities had anticipated trouble and deployed thousands of officers across Paris and other major cities. Yet despite the heavy security presence, celebrations following PSG’s penalty shootout victory spiralled into violence that disrupted public transport services, damaged property and left several police officers injured.

Celebrations Turn Chaotic

Shortly after PSG secured back-to-back Champions League titles, thousands of supporters poured onto the streets of Paris.

The iconic Champs-Élysées became a focal point for celebrations, with large crowds gathering to mark the historic achievement. But the atmosphere soon deteriorated.

Footage shared on social media showed fireworks and flares being launched into the night sky, electric bikes set ablaze on roads and shopfronts vandalised. At least one business had its windows smashed as unrest spread through parts of the capital.

Police responded with tear gas in several locations to disperse crowds and restore order.

According to French authorities, six vehicles, two businesses and a bus shelter were damaged during the disturbances.

Hundreds Arrested

France’s Interior Ministry confirmed that 416 people were arrested overnight, including 280 in Paris alone.

Police also reported clashes near PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where thousands had gathered earlier in the day to watch the final on giant screens.

At one point, the main ring road surrounding Paris was temporarily blocked by a crowd before officers moved in to clear the area. Elsewhere, police dispersed around 1,000 people gathered near the stadium in the city’s 16th arrondissement and removed makeshift barricades constructed from bicycles.

A Troubling Repeat

The violence echoed scenes witnessed a year ago following PSG’s first European crown. Celebrations in 2025 turned deadly, leaving two people dead, including a 17-year-old boy, while hundreds were injured and more than 500 arrests were made nationwide.

Despite the unrest, PSG’s players are still expected to participate in a victory parade on Sunday, including celebrations near the Eiffel Tower and a reception hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
