What began as targeted strikes by the US and Israel soon turned into a region-wide confrontation, disrupting oil flows and opening multiple battlefronts. With the US and Iran now agreeing to a two-week ceasefire, here is a quick timeline of the war that triggered a global energy shock.

The US built up forces in the region between Jan-Feb 2026. The US and Iran begin indirect nuclear negotiations through mediators, even as tensions remain high.

War commenced on February 28 after the US and Israel launch coordinated airstrikes across Iran. Nearly 900 strikes were carried out in about 12 hours, targeting nuclear facilities, missile bases and leadership sites. Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed, along with several senior officials.

Between March 1-7, the US and Israeli forces continue waves of strikes on Tehran and other cities, targeting military and security installations. B-2 bombers, F-35s and Tomahawk missiles are used against missile facilities and command centres.

Between March 8-31, Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of global oil trade passes, triggering fears of an energy shock. Missile and drone attacks ripple across the region, with strikes reported near major Gulf cities and military bases.

Between April 1-7, Iran launches missile and drone attacks on regional infrastructure, including a major Saudi petrochemical hub.

On April 7, US announces a two-weeks suspension of bombing after mediation efforts.
