Life can change in the most unexpected ways, and Pedda Lingamma's story is proof of that. Once trapped in bonded labour with little control over her own life, she is now the elected sarpanch of Amaragiri village in Telangana.
Her remarkable journey is not just about personal success; it is a story of courage, resilience, and the power of second chances. For years, Lingamma's life revolved around hard work, debt, and survival. Today, she is the face of leadership in the very village where she once lived without freedom.
Three decades of bonded labour

What are the three things that make you instantly happy?
Pedda Lingamma spent more than 30 years as a bonded labourer in Amaragiri village. Like many members of the Chenchu tribal community, she worked under local businessmen who controlled the fishing trade.
The workers remained trapped in a cycle where debt and labour went hand in hand, leaving them with almost no opportunity to build a better future. For families like hers, bonded labour was more than just work; it was a system that took away freedom, dignity, and hope.
A turning point in 2016
Everything changed in January 2016 when the government stepped in to rescue bonded labourers in the village. More than 100 people from the Chenchu tribe were officially identified and released from bonded labour.
Freedom, however, was only the beginning. The rescued families had to rebuild their lives from scratch. They needed new sources of income, stronger community support, and confidence to move forward after years of exploitation.
Although the road ahead was difficult, they refused to give up.
Rebuilding lives together

The released labourers came together and formed the Amaragiri Released Bonded Laborers Association (RBLA). The association became a symbol of unity and hope, helping families organise themselves, support one another, and work towards a better future.
Instead of allowing their past to define them, they focused on rebuilding their community with dignity. Slowly but surely, life in Amaragiri began to change. For Lingamma, this new beginning also opened doors she had never imagined.
From silent worker to village leader
In a moment that reflects the true spirit of resilience, Pedda Lingamma was elected as the sarpanch of Amaragiri village. The woman who once had no choice but to work under bonded labour now leads the same village through democratic leadership.
The hands that once worked silently in the fishing trade now sign official documents, make important decisions, and represent the people of Amaragiri. Her election is more than a personal achievement.
It is a powerful reminder that leadership can emerge from the most difficult circumstances when people are given freedom, opportunity, and trust.
A story that inspires

Pedda Lingamma's journey shows that no past is too painful to overcome.
Her transformation from a bonded labourer to an elected village head is a story of determination, community strength, and hope. It also highlights the importance of government intervention and collective action in changing lives. Freedom alone was not enough; the willingness of the community to stand together and rebuild made all the difference.Today, Lingamma stands as an inspiration not only for Amaragiri but also for countless people across India. Her life proves that when barriers are broken and opportunities are created, ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. Her story reminds us that true leadership is not born from privilege; it is built through courage, perseverance, and the determination to create a better future for everyone.
