Amid shocking revelations of polygamy and a shadowy past, the father of three minor girls who died by suicide in Ghaziabad’s Bharat City Society has been asked to vacate the flat the family was renting. As per a News18 Hindi report, the flat owners, reportedly unaware of his multiple marriages, threatened legal notice when Chetan Kumar sought more time citing police investigation into the suicides.

The sisters – Nishika (16), Prachi (14) and Pakhi (12) – had jumped to their deaths from the ninth floor of the building on February 4, following which their father claimed they had been playing a Korean game for close to three years and had not attended school since then.

Even though initial investigations did not reveal the use of any Korean task-based app by the girls, a nine-page pocket diary recovered from the room of three sisters offered a glimpse into their inner world, marked by an intense attachment to Korean culture and anguish over family strife.

Focus soon shifted from the girls’ alleged obsession to their father, who was revealed to be living with three wives — Sujata, Hetal and Tina — all sisters. Sujata was the mother of Nishika, while Hetal was Prachi and Pakhi’s mother. The youngest wife Tina is the mother of a four-year-old boy named Devu. All members were living in Sahibabad’s Bharat City society in Ghaziabad.

The family was reportedly under considerable debt, which coupled with the girls’ disinterest, led to them being out of schools since the Covid-19 pandemic.

It later also emerged that Chetan Kumar had a live-in partner in 2015 who died after falling from the roof of a flat in Rajendra Nagar Colony. The death was later ruled a suicide.

The neighbours in Bharat City society were said to be unaware of the family’s unusual circumstances.

On Thursday, the owners of the flat arrived but didn’t step into the apartment. Instead they called the girls’ father to the ground floor, asking him to immediately vacate the flat with his family.

According to News18 Hindi, Chetan Kumar sought time to move out, citing the police investigation. The flat owners, however, are said to have threatened him with legal notice if the flat is not vacated soon. The rental agreement for the flat is reportedly still valid.

Earlier this week, police recovered a mobile phone that the father of the three sisters sold to a shopkeeper a fortnight before the horrific incident, and sent it for forensic examination. Recovery of its data is essential to ascertain whether the suicides were linked to any task-based online Korean game.
