This railway station in Uttar Pradesh stands out for a unique reason. Unlike major hubs in America, China or Japan, it connects seven directions, a feature unmatched anywhere else!

No other junction in the world is connected in exactly seven distinct directions with direct train links to major parts of the country in the way Mathura Junction is.

No other junction in the world is connected in exactly seven distinct directions with direct train links to major parts of the country in the way Mathura Junction is.

Mathura Junction railway station is widely known because Mathura is revered as the birthplace of Lord Krishna. However, the station is also famous for a remarkable railway distinction that sets it apart not only in India but across the world.

This junction is not the largest in terms of platforms, daily passenger footfall, or the number of trains. Yet it holds a unique position: seven railway lines branch out from here in seven different directions, a feature rarely found anywhere else globally.

The Seven Directions

From Mathura Junction, rail routes extend as follows:

  • North towards Delhi and Amritsar
  • South-East via Agra, linking to the Delhi-Mumbai corridor, Chennai and Hyderabad
  • East towards Kasganj, then onward to Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Bihar and the Northeast
  • West towards Alwar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Gujarat
  • South-West via Bharatpur to Vadodara, Mumbai and South India
  • Along with additional local branch lines

Because of this network, Mathura connects not just the four cardinal directions but several important branch corridors as well.

Trains And Infrastructure

More than 200 trains pass through the station every day, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Superfast Express and local passenger trains.

The station itself has:

  • 10 platforms
  • 21 rail lines

How It Compares Globally

Although other countries have massive railway hubs, their directional connectivity differs.

  • In the United States, Bailey Yard is considered the world’s largest rail yard. However, it primarily handles freight trains, and passenger routes operate in only 4-5 main directions.
  • In Japan, Shinjuku Station is the world’s busiest station, handling over 3.5 million passengers daily. Yet it mainly serves metro and local lines, with long-distance routes extending in only 4-5 directions.
  • In China, major high-speed hubs such as Zhengzhou East railway station and Beijing railway station are vast and modern, managing millions of passengers. Still, their primary long-distance lines generally extend in 4-6 directions.
  • In Europe, Clapham Junction railway station handles more than 2,000 trains daily, but its main lines spread in about 4-5 directions.

A Rare Distinction

No other junction in the world is connected in exactly seven distinct directions with direct train links to major parts of the country in the way Mathura Junction is. This unique geographical and operational feature makes it not just a spiritual landmark, but also a remarkable railway hub on the global map.
