After nearly two years of delays, technical hurdles and prolonged inconvenience to commuters, the Goripalya–Hosahalli railway bridge in west Bengaluru has finally been completed and opened for public use, bringing long-awaited relief to residents and daily travellers.
The bridge had been taken up for reconstruction after railway authorities found that the earlier structure had weakened and crossed its usable lifespan. The tender for the project was floated in 2023, with the work initially estimated to cost around Rs 6 crore and planned to be completed within 18 months.
How Utility Issues Delayed the Project
Problems surfaced soon after work orders were issued on January 5, 2023. During demolition of the old bridge, workers discovered unauthorised live electricity cables running beneath the structure. These Karnataka Electricity Board lines were supplying power between Vijayanagar and Goripalya but had not been formally documented, leaving railway authorities without clearance to handle them.
Relaying 9 new power lines and securing approvals from multiple agencies took nearly 8 months. Due to these complications, the road had to be closed around 6 months after work began, and actual reconstruction could only start in early 2024.
Construction Scope and Rising Costs
Once demolition was completed — a process that took about 3 weeks — construction moved ahead in phases under railway supervision. The project included the new railway bridge along with nearly 200 metres of approach roads, concrete stretches on the Vijayanagar side, kerb work and installation of 20 streetlights.
Because of the prolonged timeline and additional works involved, the total cost of the project rose to around Rs 12 crore, nearly double the original estimate.
Impact on Residents and Political Follow-Up
During the long construction period, residents of Goripalya, Hosahalli and surrounding areas were forced to take lengthy detours, increasing travel time and congestion during peak hours. Students, office-goers and local businesses were among those most affected.
Former Padarayanapura councillor Imran Pasha acknowledged the hardship but said the reconstruction was unavoidable. He credited sustained political follow-up for ensuring the project moved forward, noting the role played by Karnataka Housing Minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan and other officials.
Bridge Opens, Inauguration Expected Soon
While the official inauguration date has not yet been announced, it is expected to take place around January 31, with Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna and Khan likely to attend.
With the bridge now open, a key road link in west Bengaluru has been restored, easing traffic flow and ending years of disruption for thousands of daily commuters.
