New Delhi: Google is now rolling out its latest desktop-style interface for selected Pixel devices as part of its March Pixel Drop. Users with the Pixel 8 and the latest devices can connect their devices to an external monitor to access a multi-window desktop experience.
Google also stated that the connected display support has reached general availability with the Android 16 QPR3 release. Google has also described that the feature allows users to connect supported Android devices to an external monitor and access a desktop windowing environment.
When the supported Android device or foldable is connected to an external display, the latest desktop session starts on the connected screen. Rather than simply mirroring the phone interface, the connected display also shows the desktop-style environment. Google stated that applications can run in freely resizable or maximized windows, and users can multitask similarly to a desktop operating system.
A taskbar shows the active applications and enables users to pin applications for quick access. The feature also works with the Pixel 8 and newer models, including the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The Pixel Tablet is receiving the desktop windowing feature that enables users to arrange and resize overlapping windows.
Google stated that on devices that already support desktop windowing, connecting to an external monitor can extend the desktop session across both displays.
The connected display support became generally available with Android 16 QPR3; with this release, finalized windowing behaviours, taskbar interactions, and compatibility with input devices such as keyboard and mice.
This update also includes the compatibility treatments intended to scale windows and avoid the application restarts when switching displays. Google demonstrated connected display features and stated it had collaborated with Samsung to bring a desktop windowing experience to devices across the Android ecosystem running Android 16 while connected to an external display.
