New Delhi: Instagram is now all set to discontinue its strongest protection feature end-to-end encrypted messaging feature, a move that could change how private conversations are handled on the platform. This upcoming change is confirmed by the parent company Meta, and it will take effect on May 8, 2026, after which the encrypted chats on Instagram will no longer be supported by the application.
End-to-end encryption is a security system that ensures only the sender and recipient can read messages, by preventing even the platform provider from accessing them.
Let’s go back to December 2023, when Instagram announced and unveiled the encrypted messaging as part of Meta’s broader push to strengthen privacy across its applications. The company has now decided to remove the feature from the direct messages.
The change is partly due to low adoption among the users, with the relatively few people who allow the encrypted chats. Once this feature is removed, the messages sent through Instagram will no longer be protected by end-to-end encryption, which actually means Meta might technically be able to access message content for moderation or other purposes.
The users who have encrypted conversations will receive notifications in the application, and they will be advised to download any of the messages or media they want to keep before the deadline. This decision has sparked debate among the privacy experts.
But end-to-end encryption is widely regarded as one of the strongest ways to protect online communications from hackers or surveillance. But at the same time, some governments and child-safety groups have argued that encrypted messaging can make it harder for the authorities to detect illegal activities or harmful content online.
Whereas, Meta has already offered encrypted messaging by default on WhatsApp, and some of the experts believe that the company might encourage the users who want stronger privacy protections to communicate via the platform rather than.
This move also signals a shift in Meta’s messaging strategy and has renewed concerns about how the private conversations on the major social media platforms are handled.
