New Delhi: iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e cost Rs 18,000 less and more respectively Rs 82,900 and Rs 64,900 respectively and on paper, that is difficult to accept. The phones are similar in terms of having the same processor A19, a 48MP primary camera, and almost the same battery life. Then just what are you paying?
Apple ensured the 17e does not feel powerless. The fact that the two share the A19 chip implies that there is no difference between the two as far as everyday performance opening apps, multitasking, browsing is concerned. The same is observed with battery life: in practice, in real life, the iPhone 17 lasted about 12 hours and 47 minutes and the 17e lasted about 12 hours and 35 minutes. It does not make much of a difference of a 10 minutes difference to most.
Both also have MagSafe charging and the 48MP standard photography main sensor, and Action Button that is a customizable shortcut button which most users initially find to be of genuine use upon its setup.
The most apparent difference in day to day use is the display. The iPhone 17e comes with a notch, 6.1-inch, 60 Hz display, whereas the iPhone 17 increases to 6.3-inch display with Dynamic Island and 120 Hz refresh rate. Any person that has used 120 Hz phone previously will find the difference as scrolling becomes smoother, animations are clearer, and moving back to 60 Hz is significantly slow.
The other significant gap is camera versatility. The iPhone 17e is a single-lens phone, this is to say that there are no ultrawide shots. No panoramic shots of the scenery, no cramming a huge crowd in a constricted interior setting. The iPhone 17 also has the extra ultrawide lens, as well as the spatial photos and spatial video capability that the 17e just does not. Another physical shortcut is the inclusion of a Camera Control button in the iPhone 17, which provides an addition to shooting.
Although the value of the 17e is recognized, parts of its failures are high considering the price of Rs 64,900 phone in 2026. Single camera, 60 Hz refresh rate and notch are some of the features that competitors have done away with several years ago. Both the Google Pixel 10a and the Nothing phone 4 Pro have various lenses and punch-hole selfie cameras, and they are also smoother in a display, which are priced less than the 17e. Those options should be considered in case remaining in the Apple ecosystem is not the priority.
To the majority of the population, it will be the choice between the display quality and the frequency with which they utilize a wide-angle camera lens. The iPhone 17 is a better purchase in case you take many pictures, like having a fluid display or just want a device that is less likely to become outdated. If you are a casual photographer, use your phone mostly to call, receive and send messages, and browse social media, the 17e provides the main iPhone experience, but at a significantly reduced cost.
The other thing that is worth mentioning is that carrier offers and trade-in deals can make the idea of upgrading an option that is easier to consider. In case these offers are provided, choosing to upgrade to the typical iPhone 17 becomes much easier to many users.
