Both crew members of the downed US F-15E were rescued through a complex, multi-domain special operations mission involving heavy air cover, deception tactics and survival training.

The rescue of the second F-15E crew member involved deception tactics, heavy air cover, survival training and coordinated special forces action deep inside Iranian territory.

The high-risk operation was launched after a US F-15E fighter jet was shot down over Iran on April 3.

The aircraft, carrying a pilot and a weapons systems officer, went down in hostile territory, prompting an urgent search-and-rescue effort amid fears Iranian forces could capture the surviving crew members.

Iranian authorities urged civilians to help locate the downed personnel, complicating recovery efforts and raising the stakes for US forces attempting to retrieve the aircrew safely.

While one crew member was rescued earlier, the second remained behind enemy lines, triggering a complex recovery operation involving special forces, intelligence assets and heavy aerial support.

CREW MEMBER EVADES CAPTURE IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN

According to the New York Post, the second crew member managed to evade capture for nearly 24 hours after ejecting, using survival training to move away from the crash site and conceal his position in mountainous terrain.

The officer reportedly used signalling methods to help rescuers track his location while Iranian forces searched the region.

Reports indicated Iranian forces and local networks intensified efforts to locate the airman, increasing urgency for US special forces to execute a rapid extraction before capture became possible.

US aircrew are trained in Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) techniques designed to help personnel remain undetected and survive until rescue teams can reach them.

SPECIAL FORCES OPERATION LAUNCHED WITH HEAVY AIR COVER

US officials told Axios that the rescue was conducted by a specialised commando unit supported by extensive air cover, including multiple fighter aircraft and helicopters securing the extraction corridor.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the mission involved personnel recovery teams working alongside dozens of aircraft to ensure protection for the extraction unit operating inside Iranian territory.

According to multiple reports, the rescue effort relied on overwhelming firepower and coordinated aerial support to deter Iranian forces attempting to intercept the extraction team.

DECEPTION STRATEGY USED TO MISLEAD IRANIAN FORCES

Axios reported that US intelligence agencies deployed deception measures to confuse Iranian forces about the timing and location of the rescue attempt.

The strategy was aimed at preventing Iranian units, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, from intercepting the extraction operation.

Officials said both crew members were able to communicate with US forces after ejecting, enabling planners to track their positions and coordinate separate rescue efforts.

AIRCRAFT HIT DURING EXTRACTION PHASE

BBC reported that the operation involved aircraft operating in contested airspace, including an A-10 Warthog that was hit over the Gulf, forcing the pilot to eject before being rescued.

A helicopter transporting the rescued F-15E crew member was also hit by small arms fire, injuring personnel onboard, though the aircraft landed safely.

Earlier Reuters reporting also indicated that helicopters involved in the search effort had come under Iranian fire but were able to exit the area.

EXTRACTION COMPLETED AFTER INTENSE FIRE SUPPORT

The New York Times reported that hundreds of special operations personnel, along with dozens of aircraft, participated in the mission, highlighting the scale of the effort required to extract the airman safely from hostile territory.

Officials cited by Axios said US forces deployed heavy firepower to suppress threats as the rescue team secured the crew member and exited Iranian airspace.

The rescued personnel were subsequently transported to Kuwait for treatment, according to officials cited by multiple outlets.

TRUMP CALLS MISSION “ONE OF THE MOST DARING"

Meanwhile, Donald Trump described the operation as one of the most daring search-and-rescue missions in US military history, saying the crew member had been located deep inside hostile terrain and successfully extracted despite mounting threats.

The rescue of the second crew member marked a significant development in the ongoing conflict, resolving a high-stakes recovery effort after the aircraft was downed earlier in the week.
