Oman and Iran have held talks aimed at easing passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the Omani state news agency reported on Sunday, as the strategic waterway remains largely closed due to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
According to the agency, the meeting took place at the deputy ministers’ level in the foreign ministries of both countries, with experts from each side present.
“Oman and the Islamic Republic of Iran held a meeting at the deputy ministers’ level in the foreign ministries of the two countries, with the attendance of specialists from both sides, during which the possible options were discussed regarding ensuring the smooth passage through the Strait of Hormuz," the news agency posted on X.
“The experts from both sides put forward a number of visions and proposals regarding it," it added.

The discussions come after US and Israeli strikes that began at the end of February, prompting Iran to target shipping in the Strait. The closure has disrupted a key maritime route through which roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas typically passes.
The conflict has paralysed shipping across the Gulf and impacted regional energy infrastructure, sending reverberations through the global economy. US President Donald Trump warned Tehran on Saturday that it had 48 hours to negotiate a deal or face “all Hell," before announcing that American forces had safely recovered a second airman downed in Iran.
Earlier this week, Tehran said it was drafting a peacetime protocol with Oman to supervise maritime traffic once the war ends, according to state media.
Iranian Deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi told Russia’s Sputnik agency that the protocol would establish basic rules to manage ship movements. Separately, an Iranian parliamentary committee has proposed imposing tolls on vessels and banning US and Israeli ships from the strait.
The disruption has also added pressure to global oil markets. Key members of the OPEC+ cartel are set to meet on Sunday to discuss production quotas for next month as prices rise amid the US-Israeli war against Iran.
The V8 group, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Gulf producers affected by retaliatory strikes, will consider whether to increase output following last month’s higher-than-expected quota rise of 206,000 barrels per day.
Since the outbreak of the war on February 28, the Strait of Hormuz has become virtually inaccessible, raising concerns over energy security and the smooth flow of oil and LNG to global markets.
