District Collector S. Venkateswar on Thursday (February 19) said the four major highway packages implemented under the ‘Sagar Mala’ projects at an expenditure of ₹1,200-₹1,500 crore each will be a gamechanger in Tirupati’s development.
Speaking on the topic ‘Industrial transformation of Tirupati district’ at the annual meeting of the Tirupati zone of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here, he said the Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway was almost complete, and the construction of a greenfield expressway taken up at ₹6,000 crore was under way.
Naidupeta industrial park in Tirupati district has become the most sought-after area in Andhra Pradesh, where tourism was also booming, he observed.
While complimenting the CII for taking up the discussion on industrial transformation, he said the region encompassing Nellore, Tirupati and Chennai achieved rapid industrial growth over the past two decades.
There were not many industrial units in this region before 2000, but the reforms initiated in horticulture sector and the availability of micro-irrigation facilities helped food processing units take roots between 2005 and 2015.
“Tirupati region serves as a feeder area to the two metro cities of Chennai and Bengaluru,” the Collector said, calling the district the pivot of a special economic council for Rayalaseema region, thus drawing the attention of Union and State governments alike.
S.P. Rajendran, chief operating officer of Kajaria Ceramics, Srikalahasti plant, was appointed CII Tirupati zone’s chairperson, and T.N. Sreenivas, chief operating officer, Exafluence Inc., Tirupati, was elected vice-chairperson.
CII-Tirupati chairperson O. Jagannath Anirudh, CII Andhra Pradesh chairperson Murali Krishna Gannamani and vice-chairperson S. Narendra Kumar spoke. Ramadevi Gourineni, former chairperson of IWN-A.P., CII-Tirupati former chairperson D. Damodar Naidu and CII-Visakhapatnam former chairperson G. Sambasiva Rao provided their insights at the session.
