An 18-year-old student from Hyderabad who went missing in Finland more than two months ago has been found dead, with his body recovered from the sea in Helsinki, Finnish police have confirmed.

Manideep Reddy, who was pursuing a bachelor’s programme in Software and Systems Engineering at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT University), was last seen on May 5 after travelling by train from Lahti to Helsinki.

According to Finnish police, he boarded a train at around 5 pm (local time) and was later seen at a K-Market supermarket in Kruunuvuorenranta at around 8 pm. Earlier surveillance footage had also captured his arrival at Helsinki Central Railway Station at about 5.14 pm before he visited a burger outlet in the city centre, where he bought food and spent some time.

Police Say No Crime Suspected

In a statement, the Finland Police said the body recovered from the sea during search operations in Kruunuvuorenranta on July 9 was identified as that of the missing Indian student.

The identification was made using personal belongings recovered with the body, including Manideep’s wallet containing his Finnish identity card, a bank card belonging to his mother and Indian currency.

Police said the National Bureau of Investigation is examining the cause of death and, at this stage, no crime is suspected in the case.

Family Calls Death ‘Suspicious’, Seeks Detailed Probe

Manideep’s family, however, has questioned the circumstances surrounding his death and insists the case requires a thorough investigation.

Family lawyer KLB Kumar alleged on Saturday that the Finnish government was suppressing “many facts/things" and attempting to treat the case as a natural death without adequately investigating the circumstances.

“We have many doubts. After two months, the body has been recovered. We strongly feel that it is a suspicious death and not a natural death," Kumar said.

“We demand that the death be investigated properly. They are supposed to investigate the circumstances under which the boy disappeared and how the death occurred," he added.

Kumar further claimed that while Finnish police initially shared updates with the family after the missing person’s case was registered, all communication stopped after May 29.

Questions Over Digital Activity After Disappearance

In a petition filed before the Telangana High Court last month, Kumar said investigators had informed the family that Manideep’s university account showed successful login activity on May 9 and again on May 10, several days after he went missing.

According to the petition, Finnish authorities said they were examining the devices and IP addresses used to access the account as part of the investigation.

Last Conversation With His Mother

According to the family, Manideep had spoken to his mother shortly before he disappeared. During the call, he reportedly told her he was outside and requested that ₹6,000 be transferred to his account.

The money was transferred, but according to the family, bank records later showed that it was never used.

Kumar also said the student’s parents had sought visas to travel to Finland to search for their son, but their applications were rejected by Finnish authorities. According to him, the reasons cited included the family’s failure to provide proof of sufficient financial means to support their stay.

The family continues to demand a comprehensive investigation, saying several questions surrounding Manideep’s disappearance and death remain unanswered.
