A six-year-old girl died after an e-rickshaw in which she was travelling with her grandmother overturned following a collision with a car in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday morning (February 17), while the child was on her way to school, has drawn attention after the injured grandmother recounted how her repeated pleas for help allegedly went unanswered at the accident site.

According to Delhi Police, a PCR call regarding the accident was received from Mata Chanan Devi Hospital.

The child, who had sustained critical injuries, was later shifted to a medical facility in Dwarka, where she was declared dead during treatment.

Her post-mortem was conducted at DDU Hospital.

The girl’s grandmother, Mercy Xavier, who was also injured in the crash, is undergoing treatment and is stated to be stable.

Police said Xavier told investigators that around 7.40 am, she and her granddaughter had boarded an e-rickshaw from their residence in Lajwanti Garden and were heading towards the child’s school.

Near the Janakpuri Fire Station, a car allegedly rammed into the e-rickshaw, causing it to overturn and throwing both passengers onto the road.

Recounting the incident, Xavier said the e-rickshaw driver had been driving carefully when a speeding white car suddenly collided with their vehicle.

“Before I could understand what had happened, I was thrown onto the road," she said, describing the moment she regained consciousness to find her granddaughter lying beside her, bleeding heavily.

Her voice trembled as she described the scene.

“When I opened my eyes, I was lying on the ground. My granddaughter was lying beside me. My hand was soaked in blood. I was in shock and pain, but all I could think about was her," she said.

The grandmother alleged that she repeatedly appealed to motorists and bystanders for help.

She said she begged a car driver present at the spot to take the injured child to the hospital, but he allegedly fled instead of assisting them.

According to the girl’s mother, Xavier stopped several vehicles and sought help, but no one came forward immediately.

She said she had received a call informing her about the accident and her mother-in-law’s desperate attempts to secure assistance.

She claimed that people had gathered at the site but failed to intervene promptly, and that it was eventually a nurse, along with another person, who helped rush the child to the hospital.

The family believes earlier medical assistance might have improved the chances of survival.

Neighbours described the victim as a cheerful child who was regularly dropped to school by her grandmother.

The family lives together with the child’s parents, grandparents and an elder sibling.

Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to rash and negligent driving causing death.

The offending vehicle has been seized, and the accused driver, identified as Sanjeev, was apprehended on Wednesday.

Investigators are recording witness statements and examining CCTV footage from cameras installed near the fire station and surrounding areas to reconstruct the sequence of events.
