A sub-jail in Hubballi, Karnataka has come under scrutiny after allegations surfaced that undertrial prisoners are indulging in drugs and liquor, turning the facility into what is being described as a “resort-like" space.

After similar controversies in Bengaluru, Shivamogga, Kalaburagi and Belagavi, now the Hubballi sub-jail has come under scrutiny.

Undertrial inmates, including those accused in murder cases, are allegedly consuming ganja, liquor and meat inside jail cells. Television sets, mobile phones and even recreational items such as carrom boards are said to be in use inside the prison premises.

A video purportedly showing inmates enjoying themselves inside the jail has also surfaced, raising serious questions about prison security and monitoring.

The fresh allegations come barely three days after Director General of Police Alok Kumar visited the Hubballi sub-jail and the Dharwad Central Prison.

Following his inspection, the DGP had stated that measures were being implemented to curb the use of narcotic substances inside prisons.

However, despite those assurances, ganja is now alleged to be available within the jail premises.
