A boy was thrashed and given electric shocks after being accused of stealing a battery in Haryana's Sonipat, with a video of the assault triggering outrage on social media.

In the viral video, the child can be heard screaming in pain and repeatedly crying, "Bachao, bachao" (save me) and "Mummy ko bulaunga" (I will call my mother) as a man and his son beat him and give him electric shocks using a capacitor.

The clip also shows the two men twisting the boy's arms and legs, slapping him and pinning him to the ground while thrashing him. The child is seen writhing in pain as the torture continues.

According to the boy's family, he was accused of stealing a motorcycle battery. They alleged that a shopkeeper, identified as Sanjeev Kumar, and his son detained the child and assaulted him over the suspicion. They said the boy was subjected to electric shocks using a capacitor during the assault.

The child's mother said she has lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that her son was beaten and tortured despite there being no proof that he had committed any theft.

Police said they have taken note of the complaint and the viral video and have launched an investigation into the matter. Officials are examining the footage and recording statements to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, police said.
