The Indian Air Force (IAF) has lost another Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) in an accident earlier this month, prompting investigations and extensive technical checks across the fleet.

Sources said the incident occurred at a key operational air base while the fighter jet was landing after a routine training sortie. A preliminary assessment suggests a suspected technical malfunction, possibly involving onboard systems failure.

The aircraft sustained severe structural damage and is likely to be written off. The pilot ejected safely and escaped without serious injuries.

This marks the third Tejas aircraft lost since its induction into the IAF.

The first crash occurred near Jaisalmer in March 2024 when the jet was returning from a firepower demonstration. The pilot had ejected safely in that incident.

The second accident took place during an aerobatic display at the Dubai Airshow in November 2025. The aircraft crashed in the United Arab Emirates, killing the pilot, Wing Commander Namansh Syal, who was unable to eject. Dramatic visuals showed the jet plunging to the ground before erupting in flames. An inquiry into that crash remains ongoing.

Following the Dubai crash, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan said he “deeply regrets" the loss of the aircraft and the pilot.

The latest accident comes at a time when the Tejas Mk1A programme is facing delays, with deliveries running nearly two years behind schedule despite IAF orders for 180 Mk1A fighters.

The IAF has not issued an official statement on the latest incident so far.
