Medical college doctors across the State intensified their agitation by launching an indefinite boycott of outpatient services and academic activities in all Government Medical Colleges from Monday.

The agitation, which commenced on July 1, 2025, raising various several demands including the immediate disbursement of long-pending pay revision arrears, revision of unscientific pension ceiling, creation of faculty posts in proportion to increasing patient load in medical colleges, and improvement of basic infrastructure, does not seem to have reached anywhere even though Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) held several rounds of talks with the government

In a statement here, KGMCTA said that while the partial rectification of pay disparities at the entry cadre level has provided some relief, other major demands, especially the pay revision arrears due from 2016, remain unaddressed..

KGMCTA pointed out that although the government announced full pay revision arrears to other State government employees, medical college doctors have been completely excluded and that the doctors were left with no option but to intensify their agitation.

Doctors have been on a non-cooperation strike, and for the last 21 days, the faculty members have been on a relay hunger strike in the capital.

On Monday, senior faculty members remained totally away from OP clinics, which were handled by postgraduate medicos and house surgeons.

Doctors said that essential medical services – emergency care, labour rooms, emergency surgeries, ICUs, post-mortem examinations, and urgent laboratory services – have been exempted from the agitation.

As part of the agitation, protest marches and dharnas were held at all medical colleges.

KGMCTA stated that unless the government takes proactive steps to resolve the stalemate, doctors will suspend all non-emergency surgeries and other elective procedures indefinitely starting February 19. From February 26 onwards, members will withdraw from all examination-related duties.
