India–China bilateral trade reached a “record high" of USD 155 billion in 2025, registering a year-on-year growth of over 12%, Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong said on Tuesday, underlining the expanding scope of economic engagement between the two countries.

Speaking at an event marking the Chinese New Year, Xu said China supports India’s BRICS presidency and is ready to strengthen multilateral coordination with New Delhi, while working together to advance the development of the Global South. He said ties between the two countries have seen steady improvement following the “successful" meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin last August.

“Last August, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a successful meeting in Tianjin, which led China-India relations from ‘a reset and fresh start’ to a new level of improvement," the envoy said, adding that exchanges at all levels have become more frequent and economic cooperation has reached new heights.

“In 2025, bilateral trade between China and India reached a record high of USD 155.6 billion, registering a year-on-year growth of over 12 per cent," Xu said. He added that India’s exports to China grew by 9.7%, highlighting the vast potential of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Xu also said China’s emphasis on self-reliance aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat strategy. “At the global level, China’s vision of a ‘world of great harmony’ echoes Indian’s pursuit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family)," he said. “We stand ready to work with India to draw wisdom from our traditional cultures, uphold the important consensus that China and India are each other’s cooperation partners."

The envoy stressed the need for closer alignment of development strategies to expand the “pie" of mutual benefit and achieve win-win outcomes. In recent months, India and China have taken a series of steps to reset relations that had come under severe strain after the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in June 2020. The prolonged military standoff effectively ended in October 2024.
