After rapidly expanding the country’s expressway network, the government is now focusing on strengthening cross-border connectivity. In a major proposed initiative, an expressway is planned to link Baba Baidyanath Dham in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district with the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal, significantly improving travel between the two prominent religious centres.
Proposal For India-Nepal Expressway
Bihar’s Road Construction Minister Dilip Kumar Jaiswal announced that a proposal is under consideration to construct an expressway linking Jharkhand to Nepal. The planned corridor will directly connect Baidyanath Dham with the Pashupatinath Temple, reducing travel time between the two religious centres by more than half.
The proposal has been sent to the central government, and construction will begin once approval is granted.
In its 2026-27 financial year budget, the Bihar government has allocated Rs 8,260 crore for road construction projects. Plans are also underway to develop a high-speed corridor between Pashupatinath and Baidyanath Dham as part of this broader connectivity initiative.
Route And Length Of The Expressway
According to Minister Dilip Kumar Jaiswal, the proposed expressway will be approximately 250 kilometres long. It will originate in Kathmandu and pass through Bhimanagar and Birpur in Nepal before entering India through Supaul district in Bihar.
Within Bihar, the corridor will improve connectivity across several districts, including Madhepura, Saharsa, Khagaria, Munger, and Banka. The expressway will finally reach Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar district of Jharkhand.
Travel Time To Be Reduced Drastically
At present, the distance between Baba Baidyanath Dham and Pashupatinath Temple is around 534 kilometres, and the journey takes approximately 13 to 14 hours by road. Once the expressway is operational, the distance will effectively be reduced to 250 kilometres, and travel time is expected to come down to just 2 to 3 hours.
This will significantly save both time and fuel costs.
Boost To Religious Tourism And Economy
The primary objective of the project is to promote religious tourism and strengthen cultural ties between India and Nepal. In addition, the expressway is expected to stimulate economic activities in several districts of Bihar and Jharkhand and enhance regional connectivity.
Strengthening Border Infrastructure
Minister Dilip Kumar Jaiswal also stated that 554 kilometres of roads have already been constructed along the India-Nepal border. The proposed expressway is seen as a major step towards further improving cross-border infrastructure.
If the central government grants approval soon, the project is expected to be completed within five years.
