Indian Merchant Navy Officer Goes Missing In US, Family Seeks Govt Help To Trace Son

Manish Dwivedi has been missing in Pennsylvania for 10 days. He was last seen after visiting a mall.

A 25-year-old merchant navy officer from Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur has gone missing in Pennsylvania in the US, leaving his family in distress for the past 10 days.

The officer, identified as Manish Dwivedi, was serving as a second officer aboard a merchant vessel that docked at a port in Pennsylvania. He had last contacted his family on May 7 after his ship reached the port.

“When the ship reached the port, it was around 4 am in India, so Manish sent us a message saying the vessel had docked because he did not want to disturb us," said his father, Santosh Dwivedi, according to a report in The Indian Express. “That was the last message we received. Since then, there has been no trace of him," he added.

Santosh, a 52-year-old medical store owner, has since been approaching government officials and public representatives seeking help to trace his only son. On Sunday, he met Union minister Anupriya Patel.

“Today morning, I met local MP and Union minister Anupriya Patel. She assured me that every possible effort is being made to trace my son, and that communication has already been established with the Ministry of External Affairs as well as the Indian embassy in the United States," Santosh said.

According to the family, Manish had returned home briefly in January and left again on April 16 for an assignment bound for the United States. His father said he regularly stayed in touch with the family through daily video calls.

“I was told that on May 6, after the vessel docked at a port in Philadelphia, Manish went to a shopping mall with two fellow officers, both Russian nationals," the officer’s father stated. “The two officers later returned to the vessel, but Manish never came back," he further said.

The family learnt about his disappearance on May 7 after the shipping company informed them that Manish had been missing for several hours. Since then, there has been no contact from him.
