Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday left for Geneva to attend the second round of nuclear negotiations with the US.

Associated Press reported IRNA state-run news agency reported on its Telegram channel stating that Araghchi and his delegation left for the Swiss city after the first round of indirect talks took place in Oman, which will mediate the talks, last week.

Araghchi will likely meet his Swiss and Omani counterparts, as well as the director general of the U.N.’s atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Similar talks were held last year after Israel started the 12-day war on Iran during which the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites.

According to AP, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to use force to compel Iran to agree to constrain its nuclear programme. Recently, he threatened Iran over its deadly crackdown on recent nationwide protests.

In response, Iran has repeatedly said it would respond with an attack of its own.

In a recent interview with BBC, Iran’s deputy foreign minister said the ball was “in America’s court to prove that they want to do a deal". “If they are sincere, I’m sure we will be on the road to an agreement," he said.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, meanwhile, said Iran will never be permitted to acquire a nuclear weapon while noting that President Donald Trump still prefers a diplomatic solution to resolve tensions with Tehran.

“Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon. That’s pretty clear," Rubio said, noting Washington’s long-standing position that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a serious threat to regional and global security.

He added that the United States has maintained military forces in the region because Iran has demonstrated in the past a willingness to attack American interests.
