A new intelligence assessment by the US Department of Homeland Security has identified the ongoing US-Iran conflict as a possible motive behind the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump at a White House Correspondents’ Dinner event last month.

The preliminary report, dated April 27 and circulated among federal and local law enforcement agencies, said the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, had “multiple social and political grievances" and suggested the Iran war “may have contributed" to his decision to carry out the attack.

The assessment, described as a “Critical Incident Note," is among the most detailed accounts so far of a potential motive behind the April 25 incident, in which Allen allegedly attempted to breach security at the event venue.

According to investigators, Allen opened fire at a security checkpoint, injuring a United States Secret Service agent who was protected by a ballistic vest. Trump, along with First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance, was evacuated safely.

The US Department of Justice has since added additional charges against Allen, including assault on a federal officer, alongside attempted assassination and firearms-related offences. He has not yet entered a plea.

FBI Examining Social Media Footprint

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is conducting a detailed review of Allen’s online activity to better understand his motivations.

Officials said posts linked to Allen included criticism of US actions in Iran, as well as broader attacks on the Trump administration’s policies on immigration, Russia and other issues.

Authorities are also examining a message Allen reportedly sent to family members on the night of the attack, described as a manifesto expressing anger at the government and referencing a desire to target a “traitor," without explicitly naming Trump.

Investigators believe the suspect’s motivations were shaped by a mix of political grievances rather than a single issue.

Focus On Preventing Misinformation

Law enforcement officials said the scrutiny of Allen’s digital footprint is partly aimed at countering misinformation and conspiracy theories, which have previously spread widely after high-profile attacks.

The DHS report, obtained through public records requests, marks a key step in understanding the motivations behind the attempted attack, even as authorities caution that the findings remain preliminary.

The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened global tensions due to the Iran conflict, which has had wide-ranging geopolitical and economic repercussions.
