Jutta Leerdam is winning on the ice and off it. The Dutch speed skater, who is engaged to Jake Paul, has just taken home gold and silver at the Winter Olympics. But her celebration after the 1,000m race is now being talked about almost as much as her record time.
After winning gold and setting an Olympic record, Jutta Leerdam unzipped her racing suit and revealed her white Nike sports top.
The photo spread fast online. Nike later shared the image with its 298 million Instagram followers. Now, advertising experts in the Netherlands say that a single moment could be worth more than $1 million for her Nike partnership.Jutta Leerdam’s Nike moment, Olympic medals, Jake Paul support and Dutch backlash
Her gold was special. Just weeks before, in late December, she failed to qualify in her strongest event. The Dutch Olympic Committee still selected her. She paid that trust back with a record-breaking skate. After her win, she became emotional. As she opened her suit and showed her Nike gear, cameras captured the moment. The image quickly appeared across global sports pages.
Fredereique de Laat, founder of Branthlete, told Dutch newspaper AD, “With Nike, I suspect you’re looking at a figure of over a million.”
Meindert Schut, editor-in-chief of Quote magazine, told NOS that with 6.2 million followers, she could earn about one cent per follower for a sponsored Instagram post. That could mean around €62,000 per post featuring Nike. Her tears also turned into a marketing moment. Dutch retailer Hema posted an ad for eyeliner saying, “Water-resistant, even with tears of joy.”Away from endorsements, Jake Paul openly shared his emotions.
After her gold medal, he said, “Man, words can’t even describe it. It’s the greatest feeling of anything I’ve ever witnessed, to be honest.” He added, “Just the amount of hard work that goes into it. Like 99.9 per cent of people will never understand. And she pulled it off, under the most amount of pressure ever.”Later, he posted a celebration video and wrote, “Time to celebrate.”Still, not everyone back home is cheering. Earlier in the Games, Leerdam faced criticism after flying by private jet to Milan-Cortina.
She shared parts of the trip on Instagram. Former Dutch footballer Johan Derksen said, “Her behavior is horrible to me, like that of a diva. If I were her coach, I wouldn’t tolerate that.” He also said, “Gradually the whole of the Netherlands is starting to get a bit fed up with her behavior.” Through medals, marketing deals, praise, and criticism, Jutta Leerdam remains one of the most talked-about athletes of these Winter Olympics.
