Jameis Winston made it abundantly clear on Sunday, September 7, 2025, in Landover, Maryland, how he felt about being the New York Giants' third-string quarterback. In a locker room interview following their first game against the Washington Commanders, Winston declared he accepts being behind Russell Wilson (QB1) and rookie Jaxson Dart (QB2). He added he still thinks he can start in the NFL.
Winston stated he’ll support Wilson and Dart, work hard every day, and help the team succeed.

Jameis Winston said as a competitor he wants to be the starter. He noted, “I know I’m a starter in this league.” Yet, he also acknowledged that his current role is different. He said, “My role right now is to assist Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart being the best that they can be while preparing to be the best that I can be.”
Winston added that whether he’s third, thirty-three, or whatever number, he will always try to help the team. He expressed gratitude for being part of the team. He said, “You have to be grateful for your role.”Even though being QB3 is not what he hoped for, he seems ready to accept it and do the work. He spoke about focusing on what he loves—seeing the team win and giving his best.

Jameis Winston played for the Cleveland Browns in 2024 before moving to the Giants. Beginning seven, he played 12 times. He threw for 2,121 passing yards with 12 interceptions and 13 touchdowns. The Giants signed Winston to a two-year contract worth roughly US$8 million in March 2025. The team also hired Wilson and drafted Jaxson Dart in the Setup, a three-option quarterback room in the first round.In the season opener versus the Commanders, Giants head coach Brian Daboll named Russell Wilson the starter. Wilson completed 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards. Winston did not play in that game.
