Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Minister and senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya’s controversial remarks on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are widely being shared on social media.

Vijayvargiya said that while the organisation has expanded rapidly after the BJP came to power, there is now a “scarcity of good human beings" within its ranks.

Addressing a programme in Bhopal on Friday, Vijayvargiya reflected on the growth of the RSS and said its expansion should not come at the cost of its core values and character.

He also remarked that after the BJP formed the government, many people, including government officials, began identifying themselves with the Sangh.

Recalling his interactions with government officials, Vijayvargiya said many of them claimed longstanding ties with the RSS after the BJP came to power.

“After the government came to power, everyone became associated with the Sangh; every official became a ‘Sangh man.’ One official even claimed that his father was a ‘Shakha’ chief," he said.

He also noted that several officials told him they had attended RSS shakhas or that their fathers had been associated with the organisation, suggesting that many people sought to project a connection with the Sangh after the BJP assumed office.

While acknowledging the organisational growth of the RSS, Vijayvargiya questioned whether the expansion had been matched by the development of individuals who embodied its ideals.

“Today, there are crowds of all kinds, yet there is a scarcity of good human beings amidst them. This is the reality.

The organisation is growing, and the ideology is spreading too. But if there are no good human beings, what is the significance of this ideology? We need to reflect deeply on this," he said.

Vijayvargiya said the issue required serious introspection, stressing that the true strength of any ideological organisation lay not merely in increasing numbers but in the quality of the people associated with it.

Referring to senior RSS workers present at the event, he described them as individuals whose integrity and commitment represented the organisation’s ideals and suggested that such personalities had become increasingly rare.

His remarks have attracted attention as they appeared to question the changing character of the RSS amid its expanding reach, with Vijayvargiya himself calling for reflection on whether the organisation’s ideological growth was being matched by the values of its members.

The Congress was quick to react to Vijayvargiya’s comments, saying they reflected the present political environment.

Congress leader KK Mishra said that, given the current political climate, Vijayvargiya’s observations appeared to carry “some truth" and took a swipe at the bureaucracy over its perceived proximity to the ruling party.

“Looking at the times, it seems officials may soon formally join the RSS. They have mastered the art of changing their mindset according to the government," Mishra said.
