A farmer from Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district has alleged that he was forced to travel to Cambodia and sell his kidney after a small loan of Rs 1 lakh spiralled into an unmanageable debt of Rs 74 lakh due to exorbitant interest rates.

Roshan Sadashiv Kude said he had taken multiple small loans totalling Rs 1 lakh from local moneylenders after suffering repeated losses in farming and attempting to start a dairy business. However, before the venture could stabilise, the cows he had purchased died and his crops failed, pushing him deeper into financial distress.

According to Kude, the moneylenders began harassing him and his family as the debt mounted, charging interest of Rs 10,000 per day. In a bid to repay the dues, he sold his agricultural land, tractor and household valuables, but the repayments fell far short of what was being demanded.

Kude alleged that when he was still unable to clear the debt, one of the moneylenders suggested that he sell his kidney. Through an agent, he was first taken to Kolkata for medical tests and then to Cambodia, where his kidney was surgically removed and sold for Rs 8 lakh.

The farmer claimed that despite filing a complaint, the police failed to take any action, worsening his mental and physical trauma. He has now warned that if justice is not delivered, he and his family will resort to self-immolation outside the Mantralaya in Mumbai, the state government’s headquarters.

Kude has named six alleged moneylenders — Kishore Bawankule, Manish Kalbande, Laxman Urkude, Pradeep Bawankule, Sanjay Ballarpure and Laxman Borkar — all residents of Brahmapuri town, in connection with the case.
