Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday described the upcoming peace talks between Iran and the United States a “make or break" moment in efforts to secure a permanent ceasefire, calling the development a significant step toward resolving tensions through dialogue.

While addressing the nation ahead of the talks, Sharif said that the two sides had agreed to engage in talks after a period of confrontation was a positive sign. He thanked the leadership of Iran and the United States for agreeing to a ceasefire and holding peace talks at his request. He said his government would do its best to ensure the success of the peace process and urged citizens to pray for the talks to succeed.

“Parties that had been facing each other in a war have now agreed to resolve their issues through dialogue," he said.

Sharif further said that Pakistan’s role in hosting the discussions was “not just a proud moment for Pakistan but for the entire Muslim world," underscoring Islamabad’s position as a facilitator in high-stakes diplomacy.

He also announced a big reduction in fuel prices to help ease the financial burden on people. Diesel prices have been lowered by 135 rupees per litre, dropping from 520 to 385 rupees, while petrol prices have been reduced by 12 rupees, from 378 to 366 rupees per litre.

The stage is set as Pakistan prepares to host delegations from the United States and Iran for negotiations over the ongoing war in West Asia. As per the talks schedule, arrivals of delegations are set to begin late Friday night and continue into Saturday.

The White House has said that US Vice President JD Vance will lead the American delegation to Islamabad “this weekend" for the talks. Along with Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Senior Advisor to the President Jared Kushner will be part of the delegation. Senior officials from the White House and the Pentagon will also be part of the negotiation team.

The Iranian side will be led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Reza Amiri Moghadam, along with other officials, will also be part of the delegation.

The talks are being held under tight security in Islamabad, with authorities deploying around 10,000 personnel, including police, paramilitary forces and the military. Islamabad’s high-security Red Zone has been completely sealed off as delegations from both sides arrive.

Officials indicated that the discussions will begin with preliminary engagements before moving into formal negotiations.
