A man was arrested after he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail bomb at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s San Francisco house and made threats outside the firm’s headquarters on Friday (local time), the company said.
“Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman’s home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt," an OpenAI spokesperson said as quoted by news agency Reuters.
“The individual is in custody, and we’re assisting law enforcement with their investigation," the spokesperson added, without giving any further details.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded to a fire incident around 4:12 a.m. (local time), where an unidentified suspect had thrown an incendiary device at Altman’s residence, causing a fire at an exterior gate.
The police added that the suspect managed to flee on foot.
Roughly an hour later, police received another call from the 1400 block of 3rd Street, near OpenAI’s headquarters, where a 20-year-old man allegedly threatened to burn down a building. Officers identified him as the same individual linked to the earlier incident and took him into custody.
Molotov cocktail is aa crude bomb made of a bottle filled with a flammable liquid (such as gasoline) and usually fitted with a wick (such as a saturated rag) that is ignited just before the bottle is hurled, as defined by Merriam-Webster.
