‘I Am Thinking About It’: Kamala Harris Signals Another US Presidential Run

Harris, who served as Vice President under Joe Biden from 2020-2024, became the Democratic candidate after Joe Biden stepped aside due to concerns about his health.

Former US Vice President Kamala Harris has signalled another run for the US presidency in 2028.

While speaking at the National Action Network, a civil rights organisation founded by Reverend Al Sharpton, Harris said, “I might, I might. I’m thinking about it, I’m thinking about it," when asked about if she was going to contest again.

Detailing her response, she added, “I served for four years being a heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States … I know what the job is and I know what it requires."

She said, “I’ve been traveling the country the last year, spending a lot of time in the south and many other places, and the one thing I’m really clear about is … the status quo is not working and hasn’t been working for a lot of people for a long time.

This is not the first time that she has signalled another run for the US presidency.

In an interview with the BBC last year, Harris expressed that she would possibly be ‘President’ one day, suggesting she may seek the Democratic nomination in 2028. She further asserted that a woman will occupy the White House in the future.

“I am not done. I have lived my entire career as a life of service, and it’s in my bones…If I listened to polls, I would have not run for my first office, or my second office – and I certainly wouldn’t be sitting here," she said to BBC journalist Laura Kuenssberg.

Harris, who served as Vice President under Joe Biden from 2020-2024, became the Democratic candidate after Joe Biden stepped aside due to concerns about his health.

She announced her campaign for President after Joe Biden withdrew his re-election bid and immediately endorsed her as his successor. She lost her 2024 presidential bid to Donald Trump, who won both the popular vote and the Electoral College.

Harris had previously served as a US senator and as attorney general of California, among other offices.

A run in 2028 for Harris could face challenges among voters who have indicated in polling that they want to see new leaders for the Democratic Party following Harris’ loss to Trump.
